“….over 50% of all mental ill health starts before the age of 14 and 75% has developed by

the age of 18…” (2012 Annual Report Department of Health)

This exciting new five day course, will be experiential in nature exploring the issues that affect young people aged 8 and upwards, which have an impact on their social and emotional well-being.

The central theme throughout will be the relationship between the young person and those working with them.

We will explore the practical application of various theories, using live examples. This will enable you to take this work back into your various settings, and provide a ‘tool box’ of resources, techniques and effective ways of relating to children and young people, in conjunction with interesting theory, so you feel empowered, supported and confident in your important work.

The course will be under pinned by the legal, ethical and professional framework.

This course is suitable for those working with children and adolescents, qualified or unqualified counsellors and psychotherapists, and those working within the statutory social care sector, voluntary/charitable sector, schools especially those responsible for pastoral support, teachers etc.

Monday 25th September 2017 – Module 1:  We will look at emotional attachment patterns and their impact on brain development. Also, how the behaviours we see presented can be the results of insecure attachment and what this means for the young person.

Monday 9th October 2017 – Module 2:  We will explore how to work effectively with challenging behaviours, looking at theories which support successful ways of working, and ones which can be usefully shared with young people to increase their understanding.

Monday 23rd October 2017 – Module 3:  We will look at self-harm and eating disorders, exploring how come young people turn to such extreme coping methods and find other strategies to support healthier regulation.

Monday 6th November 2017 – Module 4:  We will explore how to work relationally with young people who are traumatized or suffering loss and strategies to foster resilience.

Monday 20th November 2017 – Module 5:  We will explore the impact of anxiety and depression on a young person and on their emotional development and resilience. How can we effectively build their sense of self and self-worth?
