5 Day Course – Presented by Karen Burke, M.Sc. Gestalt Psychotherapy
The aim of the course is to enable people working with both children and/or adults to be able to respond effectively to their clients’ trauma. We will consider the effects of trauma on the brain, mind, body, behaviours and subsequent motivation. Empathic listening, reflective dialogue and therapeutic interventions that will support the client in their day to day living will be explored. Models of trauma will be discussed and therapeutic tools and techniques will be used. This experiential 5 day certificate will look at the effects of compassion fatigue, secondary trauma and how we as practitioners need to look after ourselves when working in this area.
This course will be of value to all practitioners including nurses, teachers, probation officers, social workers, counsellors and psychotherapists.
Module 1: Monday 7th November 2022 – the impact of trauma
In this introductory module we will be recognising the signs and effects of trauma. This will include considering different types of trauma and indicators for the practitioner
Module 2: Monday – 14th November 2022 – models of trauma
During this module various models of trauma will be explored, particularly trauma informed therapy
Module 3: Monday – 21st November 2022 – interventions for the traumatised client
Working with the client using trauma informed interventions. Working safely and effectively.
Module 4: Monday 28th November 2022 – an holistic approach to working with trauma
Appreciating and recognising individual needs within trauma informed practice.
Module 5: Monday – 5th December 2022 – vicarious trauma
Consideration of the impact of vicarious trauma on professionals and completing of the certificate by revisiting the previous modules to give a substantial insight into trauma informed practice.
Trainer : – Karen F Burke (M.Sc. Gestalt Psychotherapy) is registered and accredited by the UKCP as both an adult and child psychotherapist. She has practiced Gestalt Therapy in both private practice and in organisations, including agencies for looked after children, charities, hospices and NHS. Karen is in private practice at the Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy as a psychotherapist, trainer and supervisor.
