BACP ROUTE
Member
If you have successfully completed, face to face classroom tuition, and
graduated from a minimum of a one year full time or two year part time
counselling and/or psychotherapy qualification that included a supervised
placement with a minimum of 100 contact/client hours as an integral part of the
course you are eligible to join BACP as an Individual Member. (as MIP does)
Accredited Member
Being an accredited member of BACP demonstrates to employers, the public and
your peers your capacity for independent, competent, ethical practice and your
commitment to on-going continuous professional development.
Once you are an Individual Member of BACP you can start to work towards
becoming a Registered Accredited Member.
1. You can only apply for accreditation of you are a member of BACP
2. Counselling or Psychotherapy training – proven by a certificate of some sort
(in our case the fourth year diploma from MIP) and at least 450 hours of tutor
contact.

4. Completed a placement as part of the training
5. You must currently be practicing (minimum of one client on a regular basis)
and have been in practice for at least three years, your placement may count
towards this – unpaid and voluntary work may be included in the
hours.
6. Have at least 450 hours of supervised practice (150 of which must be post
training)
7. You need a ‘diary of practice’ to show, over a four week period, the ‘usual’
number of clients you see – this can and will vary slightly as long as it is
overall representative of your regular client load.
8. Minimum 1.5 hours of supervision per month while in practice.
9. Some CPD (within the last 12 months, from when you make the application)
10. There is some written work, including rationale for your practice, self
reflection and self awareness. Including descriptions of how ‘difference and
equality impact the therapeutic relationship. *
