Counsellor
David Nicklin
I have found Transactional Analysis therapy has given me the tools with which to decide what I want out of life and has facilitated me changing my life in order to address my own goals.
If you are struggling in your relationships or career or feeling stressed or depressed, I will listen non-judgementally while we build our therapeutic relationship and will support you in finding solutions to your problems. I have enjoyed getting to know clients from diverse backgrounds and have found all my clients’ progress personally rewarding.
Having worked as a teacher of English and Performing Arts I enjoy creativity and forming productive working relationships with others. I believe that we together create the therapy and the more of ourselves we bring to it the more effective it will be.
I know how difficult it can be to reach out for help and how hard it can be to break established patterns of behaviour, but we are all capable of change and moving closer towards happiness and realizing our own unique human potential.

Hello, I’m Fiona. I’m a qualified counsellor and coach working in person at the Manchester Institute or online. I can support you to work through the difficulties in your personal and/or work life that stop you from moving forward by building a trusting relationship with you and providing you with a safe, supportive space for exploring whatever it is that’s going on for you. I can work with you to facilitate your thinking, enable you to explore your feelings and emotions and encourage you to have belief in yourself to come to the right decisions for you in your life.
My base training over a number of years, from an initial skills course through to a post-graduate diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy at Manchester College and Salford University, is in person-centred counselling and the three core conditions of this approach – being empathic, non-judgemental and genuine, are the personal foundations of my practise. I love to learn and continuing to develop professionally is really important to me. Since qualifying, I have also trained as a coach and begun to explore a more integrative approach, as I find some people, especially with work issues, prefer a more solution-focused way of working.
I have come to counselling and coaching later in life after a long career in the arts and creative industries, but I have always found working with people on a one to one basis has been enjoyable and rewarding. I bring myself, and the belief I have gained through my own experiences of finding my way through life, to my work. And this, together with my training, gives me the confidence to believe that there can be a way through for life’s challenges for all of us with the right support and space to work things through.

I trained at the Manchester Institute of Psychotherapy and have found my understanding of myself and others to have been transformed by the process. I am passionate about the benefits therapy can bring, the insights it can reveal and the emotional education that occurs during the therapy session.
My background is in music, performance and teaching, and am therefore very interested in helping people who experience performance anxiety. However I also specialise in many of the issues that surface through our modern daily lives; depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, a feeling of being stuck, or just when things don’t feel quite right.
I provide a safe space where any issue or difficulty can be explored openly, without judgement and work with clients to help them understand and reconnect with what is most important to them in their lives. I encourage you to take a step forward and see for yourself what a difference therapy can make.
I am registered with the UKCP and subscribe to their code of conduct and am supported in my work through regular supervision.

If you’re struggling right now, you truly can be helped. Anxiety and depression are extremely common and in a world of pressure many of us are suffering in ways that don’t fit a label and often others can’t see. You deserve better than that and I built my practice to ensure hope and help is available in Manchester.
We solve our problems best with the help of others and so I offer both my skills and my care. I use a very effective type of therapy called Transactional Analysis, which brings the great thinking tools of CBT and the wonderful positive care of Person Centred Therapy together in a way that can be so transformative that people are often amazed at the change.
I’m naturally warm and supportive with a very broad life experience. My promise is to put you first, to care and to truly understand what’s happening so that we can resolve your struggle. I see a broad range of people and never judge. No matter what it is, you’re safe to talk about it here and get the help you need. So please, don’t struggle alone anymore.
I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy

It is a great pleasure to be working at the Manchester Institute of Psychotherapy, and being able to assist those seeking support through some of life’s problems.
I provide counseling and psychotherapy and am registered with the UKCP as well as the British Psychological Society. I am a qualified teacher, too. I have spent much of my professional life teaching young people and, as a trainer, with workers in the public services.
As a therapist, my particular interests are beginning, adapting and ending. I help with dealing the stresses of a new job, a new place or changed circumstances, moving from one ‘culture’ to another (country, college, work or family), perhaps dealing with anxiety or strong emotions in current life or from the past, or helping you take control of your own life. I have worked with the results of trauma and abuse as well as bereavement and loss.
I work also in relationship counselling, supporting couples through times of difficulty and helping them understand each other. I am also a member of the National Fertility Society, working with couples through some of the difficulties around fertility.
I bring respect and warmth into the room at the Manchester Institute of Psychotherapy.

I have many years experience working in the caring professions. I completed a post graduate diploma in Social Work and spent time working with the elderly and disabled. In recent years I decided to train in psychotherapy after experiencing the benefits of this process for myself. As I have been through therapy myself, I know how difficult it can be to begin this process, but have also experienced the great benefits. I like to work using our relationship, and do this in a warm and empathic way. I believe that the therapist and client come together as a team to work through issues that may stand in the way of you reaching your potential. Through the training, I have mainly used Transactional Analysis, but also have some experience working in a solution-focused way and like to work integratively as each person is an individual who may like to work in a different way.
As a therapist I offer one-to-one confidential counselling and psychotherapy . I am experienced in working with clients who are struggling with:
- Depression
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Low self-esteem
- Relationship issues
- Childhood issues
- Stress in the workplace.

I hold a deep respect for our longing to know ourselves, for our capacity to seek the light and change even when we are tired and worn down. I believe we are all seeking a deeper connection to ourselves, to each other and to the world around us, and that we feel lost when we do not know how to change. It is hard for us to be in relationship with another person if we are not in relationship with ourselves. Psychotherapy can be uncomfortable and challenging at times, but it can also provide a pathway for you to transform your life and your relationships.
I qualified as a person-centred counsellor in 2006 but then stumbled across a Transactional Analysis seminar, and I was immediately hooked. I had 2 young children at the time, and I was finding the transition into parenthood difficult. I entered TA therapy the very next week. I quickly moved into group therapy, and from there I re-trained in Transactional Analysis.
I work with adults individually, in couples and in a weekly psychotherapy group that started in 2017. I have therapeutic experience of working with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, relationship and parenting challenges, childhood trauma, sexual abuse, joylessness and lack of direction.
Prior to opening my private practice in 2014, I worked in many frontline roles: Greater Manchester Probation Service, domestic abuse work for Women’s Aid and delivering training to the NHS, part-time Lecturer in Psychology at Salford University.

The therapeutic relationship is very important. It can establish a unique process that helps to explore reflection upon becoming how you would wish to be.
I work with people who have deep aspirations for their life, yet feel they have become stuck in anxiety, depression, trauma, loss, eating problems, and/or illness. The work centres around reconnecting clients to what they want most deeply for their life, helping them to make progress in engaging with the different aspects of living that are personally and individually important, no matter what obstacles they face in order to gain a more fulfilling life path.
Clients go on to develop an increased sense of satisfaction and effective control over their lives in an atmosphere of sensitivity, safety, respect and optimism for the capacity to overcome difficulties.
My family have engaged with psychotherapy both as academics and practitioners for three generations, it is therefore very familiar and a natural way for me. For the past four years I have been working at the Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy. I am a University Senior Lecturer and I hold membership of UKATA

I am an experienced empathic and relational psychotherapist with a long history of working with others in a supportive capacity. For many years I worked as a Residential Social Worker. The client groups I worked with included mental health, drug & alcohol, addiction, compulsive behaviours, sex offenders, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, low self-esteem, relationship issues, loss of direction in life, self abuse and so on.
Currently I am undertaking a specialism is Psychosexual Therapies, I also work therapeutically with the LGBT Foundation.
In addition to therapeutic work I also competed nationally and internationally as a Bodybuilder and strength athlete. Until recently I continued to work in the sports arena as a UKBFF/PCA/IPFA Judge. I am mindful of the ways in which healthy lifestyle choices can be overlooked by individuals who do not have the internal resources to recognise the full range of options available to them. Further there are many ways in which people struggle to accept success and sabotage their own success. You may find it difficult to be seen or carry authority.
The service I offer is flexible and will be tailored to meet your need, whether that be depression, lack of self esteem, anger management, shame, relationship issues, substance misuse and self harm, eating disorders, sexual abuse, body dysmorphia, psychosexual concerns and so on. Regardless of your presenting issue I will support and facilitate your journey towards becoming a better version of yourself.
I understand and value the experience of the client and so I am always keen to ensure treatment plans are developed within your awareness with your clear understanding, commitment and acceptance. Through developing mindfulness and ownership I would invite the growth of your confidence and motivation in becoming a co-constructor of the therapy process.
I am happy to work with individuals and also couples, polyamorous units and groups. Please speak to me directly about groups as the groups I run can vary in their remit.
